Hi I am installing a UPS with an external bypass system in the bypass I am looking to install a CVT to maintain a regulated voltage when the UPS is out of service. When the UPS is in service the CVT will be energised but unloaded will this have any detrimental effect to lifetime of the CVT?

Probably not. The core will be in hard saturation and therefore have higher losses and temperature, but that is included in normal operation and, if the manual says nothing about it, it should be OK.
Be sure that the capacitors are situated below the magnetics and that cooling air is free to move through the CVT. Blocking air is the worst you can do to a CVT.
