CONSTRUCTION JOINT

Dear All Civil Engineers,

Please help me my problem on my project right now. Actually it was all about construction joint on my cocnrete pouring at Pipe sleeper foundation. We lacked the supply of concrete, that s why it became a cold joint, my proposal to my client is that I will only chip on the construction joint only,then I will clean and will apply an epoxy bond before concreting. But, my client wanted us to chipped the concrete with the length the same as development length 40 x d of the bar? Is it realistic based on the American concrete institute?

Can you post a sketch? What reinforcing do you have extending past the cold joint and what type of forces are on the joint? If you need dowels can you drill in and epoxy dowels into the concrete at the joint?

If you can't develop enough splice length, then consider mechanical connectors or welding the rebar to compensate for the lack of lap development. There are proper procedures for both that will comply with ACI.

Is it a #4 bar going 20 inches? a #5 going 25 inches? Both of these seem reasonable especially if you have a class 3 splice.
Also, epoxy coating increases development length.
Close to an edge and it gets longer.
