Is continuous mechanical ventilation required for dwelling units?
In another thread, the conclusion seems to be that it is impossible to rely on natural ventilation for a dwelling unit and still meet both the 2012 IMC and the 2012 IECC.
ASHRAE 62 has a procedure for calculating the outside air requirements for intermittent ventialation, though the cooling coil in a residential heat pump might not accommodate the resulting percentage of outside air.
I don't find mention of intermittent ventilation in the 2012 IMC. Rather, it says:
"Ventilation shall be provided during the periods that the room or space is occupied."
If a dwelling unit is always occupied, it would seem to need continuous mechanical ventilation.
It doesn't seem very "green" to require the furnace fan in a residence to run continuously.
