For sidewalks, roadways, and general area paving, I've always used the term "Control Joints" for those cuts, scores, indentations, etc. that we place periodically to control surface cracks of concrete.

I've just now heard of the term "Score Joint." I guess it makes sense -- especially with sidewalk joints that are actually "scored". But I was wondering what is more common?

What have you heard most?

Here's the joint nomenclature I've seen:

Expansion Joints
---> Provide a gap between separate concrete placements with a light filler (and sealant) to allow movement in all directions.

Construction Joints
---> Place one section of concrete, let set up, then place another section adjacent to it - usually with reinforcement tie-in.
Sometimes the joint is beveled or tooled to make it look nicer.

Control Joints
---> Different terms used for this joint that attempts to create a weakened plan through a concrete thickness using a tooled, beveled or sawcut joint to reduce thickness.
---> Used to simply control the location of cracking in the concrete - usually into a straight line that is more aesthetic and allows cleaner, uniform sealants in the crack.
---> Terms used: Sawcut Joint, Beveled Joint (score joint), Dummy Joint.

In addition to JAE's list;

See ACI 224.3R-95 Joints in Concrete Construction. It says "control joint" is familiar but should not be used, "contraction joint" is more specific to its function.
It also describes similarities & differences between isolation & expansion joints.
