We have a whole set of computers in our office running Abaqus 6.8-3 and one more powerful computer running version 6.9-2. When I load a .cae file onto the one running 6.9 it gives a message that it needs to convert the file to the newer version, and does this without any issue. Unfortunately if I run an analysis using the computer using ver 6.9 and then try to move those files to a computer running 6.8-3 it just says that the files are from a newer version of Abaqus and cannot open them.

Is there any way to down-convert .odb or .cae files from 6.9 to 6.8-3?? Are there external conversion tools that can do this?

There isn't anything to my knowledge to help with that. This way you have to buy the latest and greatest software from Abaqus, those sneaky demons.

At the risk of sounding too pious why on earth are you running some machines at 6.8 and others at 6.9 ?

Surely you just upgrade all the machines to the same level.

surely you do sound pious haha. The one machine was upgraded to 6.9 because 6.8 was not working on it properly. I was just trying to make things easy on our IT guy since we bug him a lot, and thought I'd bug everyone on the internet instead. We're going to upgrade the other machines to 6.9 soon to remedy this. Thanks!

"The one machine was upgraded to 6.9 because 6.8 was not working on it properly" - that's rather odd! Did you try a re-install of 6.8 first?

no we didn't. The abaqus env file had some funky lines in it that were giving us errors and when we removed those it just didn't work at all, no errors or anything. The computer is pretty locked down by our IT guy so we couldn't do a reinstall of our own. Our IT guy just went ahead an installed the new version when he did the reinstall, and I guess I just didn't realize there would be a problem between versions.

Your IT guy screws things up for you, then you try to "make things easy on your IT guy" ! He deserves to be bugged a lot !

I fully understand, I've had similar experiences with obstinate, know it all , power mad, look down their noses at you dumb nut and bolt engineers from IT staff, who are clueless about the requirements for the smooth running of FEA software. The last time I had trouble from an IT guy I stated I would inform the company directors why multi-million pound programs were being held up, the IT guy immediately backed down!

If you are squeaky enough they will unlock your box and wash their hands of what ever you do to it. Every one wins!
