hi all. i use AutoCAD 2002. i created a 2d drawing of a drainage basin with contour lines. i would like to create a 3d surface using the elevations of the contour lines. the extrude command only allows me to create a drawing that makes the contour lines look like steps. i cannot extrude using an angle; i get a "The Draft angle results in a self intersecting body" error (ie. i extrude the 396 [lowest] contour by 4, using a -45 angle because it's a 1:1 slope)

what i would like to end up with is a 3d mesh view of the basin. is there any way to create a 3d view using the contour lines?

There are several ways to construct surface models using Autocad. The method you use will depend on the object you are creating. A surface mesh, or "patch" can be created using either the 3DMESH or PFACE command. The EDGESURF command creates a surface mesh using four edges joined at the endpoints. The RULESURF command creates a mesh of ruled surfaces between two curves or lines. The TABSURF command creates a tabulated surface mesh using a curve and a specified direction to extend the surface. Professional tip - when constructing holes in surface-modeled objects, always draw the original circles on a seperate construction layer. After the hole has been surfaced with the RULESURF command, turn off or freeze the layer. If you do not turn off the layer, the inside of the hole will not be displayed when HIDE is used or the object is rendered. Hope this helps - John

looks like theres about 5-6 hours of surface creation before i can get a 3d view of my basin. ouch, guess im back to the old drawing board... literally :)
