I have step files that I cannot open through NX, but can convert through the step214 translator.

I get Error Number - 1 when I try to Convert through Nx.

The following is an error that I believe is causing NX to not be able to convert the file:

I have no idea what is wrong, and this is happening to all of my step files.

I don't understand the original question.

"I have step files that I cannot open through NX, but can convert through the step214 translator."
You cannot open this step file from NX , into NX , ( I.e File-open, file of type = Step etc.)
but you can convert the file FROM Step to NX using the "standalone translator" ? ( Start - all programs - Siemens NX xx - Translators - Step AP214 etc. and the resulting partfile-s can be loaded into NX ?)
- Did I understand this correctly ?

Regards,
Tomas

The version I am using is either 1872 or 1892

Yes, this is correct, I can convert using the standalone converters, but cannot convert using NX Directly.

I apologize if my wording is not very good.

No need to apologize. We are all humans. :)

The fact that you can convert using the standalone translator but not the "file -import" in NX , is a reason to speak to Siemens Support.
Both ways should produce the same result.

What system did export this stepfile ?
You can open the stepfile using a simple text editor such as notepad. ( Notepad is not too happy about large text files , opening might take some time.), the name of the sending system should be somewhere among the first 10-15 lines from the top.

Regards,
Tomas

The problem seems to occur no matter what system exported the stepfile, even when the stepfile was exported by nx itself.

The only other export systems that I am aware of (there are hundreds if not thousands of files, can't check them all) are
- pro-e
- creo (i know creo has replaced pro-e, but some of the files are so old, that they came from before creo)
- solidworks

It may have something to do with the environmental variables, mine are below.

Code:
JAVA_HOME        = C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.8.0_251
STEP203UG_DIR    = %UGII_BASE_DIR%\step203ug
STEP214UG_DIR    = %UGII_BASE_DIR%\step214ug
UGII_BASE_DIR    = C:\Program Files\Siemens\NX1872
UGII_DEX_JRE     = %JAVA_HOME%
UGII_JAVA_HOME   = $JAVA_HOME%
UGII_ROOT_DIR    =%UGII_BASE_DIR%\UGII

Because I tend to update java (as I also do some programming at work, I set the UGII Java variables to be %JAVA_HOME%

Both Creo and Solid Works normally creates valid step files. ( the reason for this question is that there are some systems that sometimes creates "peculiar" step files)

Do you have some really simple stepfile , without confidential information, that you can upload such that we can test ?

The NX logfile might contain relevant information about the problem. But, the logfile also contains information about who you are and your company , ( Sold to , webkey, name etc. )
if you upload the logfile, strip the first "page", ~50 lines, everything above the line "Kits installed on disk--" before you upload.

Tomas

Hi

Is your Environmental Variable UGII_JAVA_HOME = $JAVA_HOME% correct?
I think it should be: UGII_JAVA_HOME = %JAVA_HOME%

NX5 -> NX12
Testing NX (1899)
I-deas 12, NX I-deas6.6
Solid Works 2017

- Sorry, These are all confidential files from customers of the company I work for.

- I mistyped, it currently is %JAVA_HOME%

Check if Your firewall doesn't block something. Disable it and try again.

I have solved my problem, The problem was the fact that I had set

Code:
STEP203UG_DIR    = %UGII_BASE_DIR%\step203ug
STEP214UG_DIR    = %UGII_BASE_DIR%\step214ug

after deleting this from either my system or user variables, my issue has been resolved.
