I’m looking for advice on surface prep and coating for some in-place structural steel.
The job is the replacement of two cooling towers on the top of the lower roof of a downtown post office. The towers are in the middle of a fairly large roof area with no obstructions.
The existing towers are supported on a 30 ft by 30 ft framework of W24x76 beams framing into 6” square tube stub columns. There are 6 of the W24x’s with some W6x’s framing across the top which the towers sit on. All of this steel is to remain and will be supplemented by some additional steel beams since size of new units is slightly different that existing. I calculate about 1600 sq ft total of surface area of existing steel.
I need to write a specification or set of instructions on the preparation and painting of the existing steel. Obviously, the steel will see a lot of weather and eventually the cooling towers will leak in spots, as has happened to the present set up. Structurally, there is enough capacity to support new units even with the isolated corroded areas.
My questions is should I/can I sandblast this steel to a SSPC 6? What is ballpark cost for job like that?
What is relative cost for zinc rich primer and 2 coat epoxy versus what is normally done in an architect's paint spec?
