I have 8 nr. cooling towers in parallel serving a bunch of chillers. The chiller controller vendor wants to install a return (out) tower temperatutre sensors on each tower> I think one common return sensor shold be good enough for the staging of the tower fans... what you think>?

8 sensors give the advantage of detecting cooling tower failures (fan belt,fouling,....)

remp, Your definition of return is the standard definition of supply. Otherwise I agree and there should be no need to monitor the outlet of each tower, especially by the chiller mfr., who should only be interested in what their condenser gets from the towers in what is typically a combined stream.

The controls vendor wants to improve his bottom line!!!

If you have 8 cooling towers it must be a fairly large plant and I would monitor the leaving temperature of each towers if for no other reason than to monitor each towers performance. The cost would be negligible for a large plant. Each chiller can probably monitor the condenser water entering temperature anyway.
