We have a part file for a die roll; we are looking for a way to have the roll un-rolled. for a math explanation, if you were to plot the space our roll occupies in cylindrical coordinates (r, theta, h), rather than using a conversion we would want the direct output, r=x, theta=y, h=z. this would unroll our roll for us.

We are also only interested in the outer shell of the roll so if it would simply the process we do not need to work with the inner portion of the roll, if it is a 12” dia roll, we would only care about the outer 1”.

If there is a way that this can be done using SE that is great, but if we need to export to a Parasolid or Iges and have the conversion happen to that file and then import the converted file that would work as well.

As far as the sheet metal option goes in solid edge, I know how to sliver layers of my part and if I wanted to make 100 files I could stack the stretched slivers together to make the flat that I want, but unless there is a way to take care of this problem with out loosing the 3D shape of the die most of the sheet metal options have been explored.

Thanks

Hi,

when it's constructed as .par it can't be unrolled. AFAIK
CoCreate can do that and Pro/E has an option to unroll at
least the surface (must not form a closed loop).
The only way SE can handle this is by converting it to .psm

Assuming a simple solid shaft modeled as .par

- start SE with an empty .psm

- insert part copy --> the shaft
- do a cutout so it get's a tube with open ends
- do tiny cutout along it's length say 0.1 mm wide (depends
on the wall thickness too small may prevent flattening)

- use 'Convert to SheetMetal'
- select the outer face(!) of the roll

Finish
Cancel

Now proceed as usual to flatten a model
