Is it possible to braze nickel plated carbon steel to 304 satinless using copper as the filler material? This part would be brazed in a belt type brazing furnace with hydrogen atmosphere. My guess is that the plating will be degraded, and we has offered to the customer to use 304 SS on both parts, but have ad no success. Any help or info. appreciated.

We would run a couple test parts and let the customer decide.

You would need a plater with really tight process controls.

If strength is an issue then you will want to create a cupronickel intermetallic. However that would put the strain on the bond between the nickel and the underlying material.
