copper vs. aluminum conductors in LV systems

Anyone know of a good recent article that states the pros and cons of al vs. cu conductors for lv systems? It seems that alumimum alloy condcutors are making progress in keeping up with cu conductors performance. There is also the cost savigs with copper being at a premium.

In addition, anyone familar with Alcan's Stabiloy?

I don't have any info myself, but keep in mind the extra labor/material costs for increases in pipe size.

I'll assume you've done the usual Google searches. I'm sure Southwire and others have some information available on use of aluminum.

I typically make a big distinction between lighting and receptacle circuits and larger power feeders. I would never specify aluminum for #10 or #8 sizes due to concerns on terminations and the end-use devices.

If an owner thinks aluminum will be less expensive or wants to use it for some other reason (like they make aluminum or some silly reason like that), I don't have a problem with aluminum for larger power circuits, although virtually no industrial facilties, other than those associated with aluminum manufacturers use it anymore in my experience. It is used in some commercial building work.

Basically, its down to cost, as copper prices shoot up Aluminium comes into its own.

As stated before, cable sizes are larger for equivalent current rating and Solidal conductors are more time consuming to install and terminate..
