Copy A Configuration

Good after noon, I have a simple question or maybe it is a wish. I have a configuration in one part that I would love to be able to copy and paste into a configuration in another part. I have been playing with it and so far I have not figured this one out,, so my question is, is there a way to copy a configuration from one part to another? I hope this is not going to be another one of those visit enhancement requests again. Thank you in advance for any assistance rendered.

Configurations can change many things: appearances, dimensions suppression states... What in particular are you trying to propagate to the next model? Some of these such as dimensions are not likely to translate to the next model very well. My best guess is to create a design table with only the changes required and put a copy of the design table in the next part. I hope this helps.

thanks for the reply. I have a copper single loop tube as a configuration in one part and I want to copy it to a configuration of another part and then just change the material. The only difference between the two is one is brass and one is copper. I hope that makes sense to you.

Why not just have them be 2 configurations in the same part? Or save a copy of the first part and change the material. I hope this helps.

Well the reason for the separate part is for the BOM's where these configurations will be used. Well I guess it is off to request enhancements again and start to make the new configuration, thanks anyway.

Attached is a macro that saves out each configuration as a separate part with the configuration name appended on to the base name. I do not remember who I got this from so apologies to the author. I hope this helps.

No ER is necessary. You actually have several options to achieve what you want.

Rob's suggestion of "Save As" to a new part is probably the easiest way to achieve what you stated you were after.

If you were to explore further the options/capabilities afforded to you with configurations you will see that you can have the configuration name show up in a BOM instead of the document name. By making one config copper and the other brass you can reference both as "separate" parts as far as the BOM is concerned. This might more directly satisfy your needs since the dimensions can be as common as you want between the configs within the single file.

I tried that already, but it did not work, the SA over wrote the part file and destroyed the other configurations that where in it, but I was not dumb, that was a copy it experimented with. Both part files have several configuration already in them that different customers want for one reason or another. Sense I have never used a macro I had no idea what to do with it so I never tried it and right now I am just trying to build the now configuration from scratch. Can not waite any longer to get this miserable thing done.

Are you saying you have a feature (single loop tube) in a part that you would like copied to another part? You can copy features.

If you do truly mean copying a configuration from one part to another... that doesn't really make sense. Two parts that appear similar may be constructed totally different. Configurations simply control simple parameters in a part... i.e. values of dimensions, custom properties, suppression states of features. There is no guarantee that D1@sketch1 in the donor part will be for the same feature as D1@sketch1 of the receiving part.
