I want to select a drawing in a cad file and copy the drawing into another cad drawing. When I try to select the entire drawing, only a few lines get copied into the other drawing. Why does this happen and how can I can copy this drawing into the other drawing? These are topo drawings. The drawing I am trying to copy is a 3D drawing. Thanks.

I use the copybase command (defined it as 'CB') in Bricscad... and it should work OK in AutoCAD, too...

Hello Dik,

Thank you for your suggestion. I tried it and it did work.

Why do a paste and copy since it has limitations on the number bytes it can handle. About doing an Xreference instead and then if you want you can turn the Xref into a block drawing.

chicopee... what limitations? I've used it for small elements, and not large components... is there a maximum amount of data it can copy?

Hello, I did have a problem with the "Copy Slection" command the first try. The command did seem to space limited. The window for the entire drawing only picked up a small amount of information when it was pasted onto the other drawing. One other problem I had was that the scales were different. I do not why or how to check what scale was used. Other than draw a line one foot long and see what it measures. Can anyone shed some light on the scale problem and how I could fix a drawing scale with a singel command like LTScale?

I don't know the amount of bytes Paste and Copy can handle, however, I do remember having only partial information transfered and what I did was to break down the drawings into smaller sizes and reconstitute them in the new drawing. I rather use the Xref or Wblock commands when transfering drawings.

Hi chicopee, Yes, I can try the break down of the drawing. Should I explode everything first to keep the objects easier to handle?

If I were you, I would make a second file of this drawing before attempting to break down the drawing to reconstitute it in another drawing. If you don't have to explode the drawing you will be better off in my estimation because I doubt that you'll be able to reconstitute all elements as a 3D drawing without spending an inordinate amount of time.
As I stated before, you are better off to Xref or do a Wblock. To do a Wblock, write WBLOCK on the command line, then, you'll be asked to select the drawing, assign a new file name and file it in the directory of your choosing. The drawing will in essence be a copy but with much less data bytes since it was turned into a block drawing.

Check the layers of the objects you are trying to copy. Sometimes Defpoints or 0 layer do not get copied over, specially when layeriso has been used to isolate certain layers. If that does not work, I would explode the objects and try again.
