Hi, using a remotely mounted bulb and capillary thermostat for a project. Thermostat is in a NEMA 4 box, but the bulb & capillary will be run through a 3/4" screw tight coupling outside of the box to a tank...i need to seal around the capillary to keep moisture out of the box. I was thinking something like a cordgrip would work, but the t-stat bulb diameter is 3/8" OD and the capillary is about 0.1" OD. Therfore I would need a cordgrip to fit over the 3/8" bulb and seal around the 0.1" capillary. Do products like this exist? if not, any suggestions. I'd prefer something off the shelf. I also could rtv seal around some sort of bushing. any help is appreciated...thanks!

Many of the commercially available cable glands tighten down far below their nominal minimum size. You may well find one that will suffice. Is this a one-off or a commercial product? If it's commercial then disregard the above - an approvals body would have a field day! - but if it's a one-off then practicality may win over paperwork.

thanks, i.m not really sure what "one off" is but really all i care about is if the thermostat is going to stay dry inside of the box, essentially making it a nema 4 "style" box...i don't need any agency approval but it does need to work...

If you can't get the cord grip to slide over the bulb and seal down on the capillary tube, you could build the capillary tube up with heat shink tubing so that the cord grip will seal. There is heat shrink tubing with 4:1 ratio that would work. Also some cord grips have a slit in the rubber compression gasket so you can open the slit and slip the gasket over the capillary tubing and then tighten the nut.

Look for a marine cable clam. They provide a large opening for connectors, and a small seal around the cable.
