Coring into an Existing Steel Bolted Tank

Hello,

Looking for some advise on coring into an existing steel bolted tank. Is this a standard procedure or not recommended? The tank is roughly 220,000 gallons with a 30' diameter. Need to add one discharge flange from a new pump for a wastewater application. The core would be roughly 5-6 feet off of the tank base. Would sealing the opening with Sika Flex be enough if not coring through any of the seams?

What type of flange would be recommended for this situation?

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks!

It can be done. If this is something like a clarifier or package treatment unit then I'm guessing the connection will be made less than 10 feet below the water line.

I'd only connect via flange if the connection is to be made above ground level.

For a buried connection a flange is too rigid and a mechanical joint is needed. Due to the low pressures in play I would consider connecting via something like a boot. Here is an example of a boot style connector for use with thin walled tanks. www.trelleborg.com/sl-si/seals-and-profiles/products-and-solutions/seals-for-pipes-and-manholes-and-ancillary-equipment/connectors/pipe-to-manhole/trelleborg-570

What is the diameter of the connecting pipe, and do you know how corroded the tank walls are?
