Corner cleanup whilst profiling 1

So I'm trying to clean up a couple of corners on a pretty easy profiling operation, straightforward enough but each time I try the entire part is profiled with the new smaller end mill.

I insert -> operation -> mill_planar -> planar profile and select a 10mm end mill for the tool. I then go to the cutting parameters -> containment and select 'use 2d IPW' for the in process workpiece. Hit generate and get the toolpath I would expect. I then copy/paste this operation and edit the operation by selecting a 6mm end mill as two of the corners have a 3.2mm radius, no other parameters are changed, but when I hit generate the toolpath profiles the whole path.

I know I'm missing something really basic and simple but I'm new to NX so please forgive my 'noobness'

I don't know what version you are using, so I'll answer in NX 6.

If you want to do an automatic "corner cleanup" operation, you're going to have to use a different operation. "MILL_PLANAR" operations aren't going to cut it.

Instead, do your first Planar Profile with the large tool as you intended. No change there.

For the cleanup operation, choose "insert -> operation -> mill_contour -> zlevel_profile"

Select you part, trim boundries, etc.
Open "cutting parameters" and choose containment. Right at the bottom you will see "reference tool". Choose the tool you used in the previous operation.

Done. I'll include an NX6 example.

Hi Jay,

Thanks for that, your mention of the reference tool put me on the right track. Still using MILL_PLANAR I went back and for the second operation used reference tool instead of 2d IPW for containment and it worked as you'd expect.

I'm using NX8 btw.

This can be done in Planar mill as long as all the operations use the same geometry group. Create a boundary geometry group, then make this the parent geometry for the operation. They all must use the same method as well. Once this is defined the 2-d ipw will work fine.

Another method is to use a reference tool.

John,

Thanks once again for your help. There are so many different ways to do the same thing in NX I find it exciting and frustrating in equal measure!
