In a question I am solving it says the following for PE exam Geotech it asks:
A 4 x 4 ft footing is in sand for which the bearing capacity factor is 15. The sand is intended to limit the applied pressure on this footing to a value that will control settlement. What is the modulus?
First of all I didnt understand what the bearing capacity factor is. Also i didnt understand the phrase about settlement.
And in solution, it says: Es = 8 (ton/ft2)x 15 x (2000lbf/1ton) x (1 kip / 1000 lbf)= 240 kips / ft2
I have no idea where 8 is coming from and 2000 (that one may be from atm presssure but can not find formula). and what do they mean by bearing capacity factor? one of the N values? but which one? N gama, Nq, or Nc ??
can someone explain this question and solution? possibly referring me to a place where i can understand, or write the formula? I am lost here
