Corroded Skirt Repair

I have a skirt where the bottom few inches have rusted out, and the plan is to cut the bottom 6" out in segments to replace it. My first instinct was to CJP it all around, like-for-like, from the outside so that no one is welding in confined space. However, this skirt is 3/8" thick by 18'-0" diameter, and I'm concerned about weld distortion.

So, what should I be concerned with, welding inside confined space or weld distortion?

Also, I'm thinking about providing this single weld pass PJP as an alternate. I'm not sure if a j-groove can be done on a curved surface, but this would be ideal.

Rusted or corroded? , how much is the deep of corrosion?

You must first investigate the cause

I assume that the corrosion is on inside of skirt, then you can weld (fillet weld) a strip plate 3/16” x 10” in segments
over the corroded section. First you need to clean the corroded section and protect it with a coating that allow a fillet weld (Carboweld 11- Carboline), the same with each segment of strip mentioned

It's corroded 1/4" or 2/3 of the 3/8", and it's cause isn't an issue. It's old and exterior and, we are extending its life.

You make a good point about cleaning and adding, but the bearing ring plate is in worse condition. I didn't mention that in the OP because we will be replacing it totally.

I want to specifically address the weld detail. I feel comfortable addressing the cut out procedure.

"I didn't mention that in the OP because we will be replacing it totally".

Very nice. I wasted my time !!

I've mitigated distortion on large diameter or very large rectangular perimeter repairs by having multiple welders welding segments in strategic locations smultaneously, sometimes using stitch welds or back step welding techniques for the root and seconds passes (layers).
