Corrosion of Aluminum is an H2S atmosphere

Hello All,

I'm looking for some help in locating corrosion rates of uncoated aluminum in an H2S atmosphere (or atmosphere where H2S is present in a significant amount).

Also, could anyone make a recommendation on a good general corrosion reference book covering a wide range of materials. Something from one of the societies, McGraw-Hill, Wiley, etc. perhaps...

Dear Sir:
A good handbook is the ASM Handbook of corrosion data. Materials data series. Aluminum not the best choice. 300 series stainless and nickel base alloys are widely used but under some conditions stress corrosion can be a problem.

From what I have read aluminium earns an A rating when in contact with hydrogen sulphide. Suggest you talk to one of the aluminium smelters in your area as to choice of alloy and likely exposure conditions.

I'm not sure I see a reason to subject Aluminum to this environment. If you need the material properties of Aluminum, you may wish to electroplate the Aluminum. Not knowing the size, the geometry nor the appearance requirements of the part, it's hard to say.

You could go from one extreme (gold) to another (electroless Ni).

I would need more information before I would recommend a specific route.
