I am searching for a reasonably simplified equation for computing the approximate rate of corrosion of a steel sheet pile (A572, Grade 50, 1/4" thick). I have groundwater chemistry information, including the pH, sulfates, chlorides, alkalinity, and conductance. The upper section of the sheet will be above the groundwater table and the lower section will be below the permanent groundwater level.

Suggest you look at the British steel piling handbook for typical rates of corrosion. I think these are related to tidal areas, however, you can be sure that if your soil is saturated then the supply of oxygen, and hence your rate of corrosion will be low.

The piling handbook mentioned by Ginger is useful. Also the Eurocode chapter 5 on piling is another useful reference. If you would like to discuss please call Gerry McShane at 973-428-6100

British Steel is now Corus (a UK and Dutch company), there's a handy guide on their website.

Thank you all for your help. The corus reference was helpful.
