I have an uncoated pipe immersed in Seawater (Mediterranean Sea), 60m Water Depth. I have estimated the rate of corrosion to be .2 - .4 mm per year.

Has anyone had experience of pipe in similar conditions. Can you confirm these rates or otherwise.

The Nickel Development Institute had published a technical paper evaluating corrosion rates of carbon steel and other alloys for use in desalination plant pump components. The general corrosion rate for carbon steel varied from 3 mpy with a maximum pit depth of 0.078" in quiet sea water to 78 mpy under flow (26 fps).

Be aware that localized corrosion at welds or corrosion from MIC can be substantially higher than corrosion rates on unwelded coupons, particularly if the published rates are from simulated seawater without biological activity.

knowkeys,
Please explain your method to estimate the corrosion rate in sea water.
