I am designing a lot of stainless parts in a machine that will be subject to cleaning with chlorine bleach and 70% iso-propyl alcohol/water. Try as we might to design them out there still are a few crevice areas that will occasionally be exposed to the cleaners.

A lot of visual value as well as the reqt to be able to clean it effectively, so we are polishing the parts (a mix of electropolish and mechanical polish).

With the cost and availablilty of 316 being what they are I am looking for some alternates to reduce the cost. One metal shop has suggested the use of Allegheny AL201HP as a replacement. I was wondering if any of you folks have had any experience with this or could offer any suggestions.

Have you looked at AL2003?
This alloy has better corroisn resistance than 316, higher strength, and lower cost.
If you go to 201 you will be giving up a lot of corrosion resistance compared to 316. It won't be much lower than 304, but it sure won't be any better.
For simple polished flat pannels I wouldn't worry, but in crevices you will get pitting and rust streaks.

Neither should your protection

201 is widely and successfully used in the food service industry where chlorine bleach is commonly used as a cleaning agent. Mechanical polish is detrimental to corrosion resistance, but the electropolish should keep you safe.
If you can use a bright annealed finish or a rolled on type finish, like Koolline, and avoid mechanical polish, you will have the best performance.
