Group,

I have a tool application where the vendor would like to use Carbide Steel #45 in replacement for the speced 416 Stainless Steel. Can anyone tell me the relative corrosion resistance between the two types of steel? Also would be interested to know the relative ferromagnetic properties between the two.

Either material will be coated with TiAlN as a final process.

Part will be used in an outdoor application (worldwide).

Help.

Thanks Craig

Perhaps 'Carbide Steel #45' is AISI 1045 carbon steel?
It rusts very badly outdoors except in the driest of deserts (relative humidity < 25%).

416 is a free-machining, martensitic SS. Lower in Cr, higher in S & C, so inferior to any austenitic SS in corrosion resistance. But, better than any plain carbon steel. Should be OK outside if clean rainfall, no salt, grime or pollution.

Both are ferromagnetic, 1045 probably more so. What magnetic properties are needed?

Thats part of the problem. I cant find a refrence for chinese tool steel grades to check what the composition is.

Maybe my first question should be "anyone know what Carbide steel #45 means?"

I would guess that "Carbide Steel" is supposed to be "Carbon Steel" and grade 45 is indeed the Chinese equivalent to grade 1045 in SAE or ASTM standards. The two best references for determination of equivalent steel grades are the following:

Worldwide Guide to Equivalent Irons and Steels, 4th Edition

Stahlschlüssel (Key to Steel)

From some more browsing, am convinced 'Carbide Steel #45' is a mis-translation. China has (at least) 3 GB standards with a carbon steel grade 45 or #45 ~ AISI 1045.

416 stainless can be ordered in China as AISI 416 or SUS 416 (the JIS equivalent). China probably has more producers of AISI stainless grades than does the US. You will get the nearest equivalent GB grade, Y1Cr13.
