Dear all,

I am searching for a corrosion test with chlorine.
Similar to an ammonia test or salt spray test I want test corrosion resistance of some metals. These metals will be in a swimming pool environment and therefore the need for chlorine testing.

Any ASTM standards available on this?

What should I be careful about? I heard it is pretty dangerous.

Thanks

There is no need to test any metals as that has been done many, many times. The people that supply the Chlorine will have a list of suitable materials. If this for a public swimming pool get and expert.
Chlorine gas is extremely toxic and relatively low concentrations can kill you.

He could always be choosing to test exotic alloys for their applicability.

Take care of specifying austenitic stainless steels for swimming pools - they are susceptible to stress corrosion cracking. Don't believe the books that say it doesn't happen at temperatures below 60 deg C. Suggest you do an internet search. One reference is:
"Room Temperature Stress Corrosion Cracking of Stainless steel in Indoor Swimming Pools Atmospheres" by Oldfield and Todd. British Corrosion Journal 1991 Vol 26 No 3.

The way to do this testing is to use chlorinated salt water and bubble air through it.
In reality it is the wet/dry cycling that causes real issues.
I have caused SCC failure in parts that I was holding in my hand.

This is why you are seeing a lot of duplex SS being used in pool hardware. It is much stronger than 300 grades and has significant resistance to SCC.
