Can a painted white head from the manufacturer be used as a corrosive resistant type head in a pool area? If so, is there a reference in the code that states such. I can't find anything anywhere.

NFPA 13 2010 6.2.6.1.1 LISTED corrosion-resistant sprinklers shall be installed in locations where chemicals, moisture, or other corrosive vapors sufficient to cause corrosion of such devices exists.

A6.2.6.1.1 Examples of such locations include the following:

(22)Area over and around swimming pools, chlorine storage rooms and pool pumo rooms.

I do not believe white painted sprinks are listed for corrosion resistance. However, I've gone after and been granted a variance before to do just that when it was an extremeley small pool room (10 heads, if memory serves me correctly).

By the book, I think you're looking at wax coated or lead.

wait...I take it back.

See the attached Tyco data sheet.

Page 5, note 5 states that where polyester coated sprinklers (i.e white) are noted to be UL and c-UL listed, the sprinklers are UL and c-UL listed as corrosion resistant sprinklers.

Wow, learn something new every day.

Awesome, Thanks for the response.

I just took a look at the Victaulic V27 data sheet and the painted heads are listed as corrosive resistant for all purposes.

Exactly, the white heads are NOT painted. Sprinklers are not allowed to be painted. Those are coated heads and meet the requirements of corrosion resistance. They also look a lot better than those ugly wax coated heads.

Be sure to consider the corrosive atmosphere to the coating. Typically the manufacturers use a Teflon (PTFE) resin. If your atmosphere contains heated halocarbons, then these sprinklers will fail corrode rapidly as PTFE has poor chemical resistance to heated halocarbons.

The code does not states what which head can be used as a corrosive resistant but yet requires a corrosive resistant head to be used when exposed to weather conditions.

The manufacturer is the only one that can determine so.
If the head is white that does not means is corrosion resistant. They call such coating poly coated which in cases is corrosion resistant however does not cover the entire sprinkler head so you still have raw metal exposed to corrosion.

Call your local supplier and obtain the specs if needed

What about when a metal fusible link is used on that white head?? What is preventing the metal from being exposed to the corrosive atmosphere? Got to really look at the entire sprinkler NOT just the frame. Glass fusible link you may be OK, what about the cap holding back the water, what is that made of and is it subject to corrosion?? It is not always that easy...lol

Another consideration is the installation of the head. The poly coating does not get scratched like the wax coating does.
