I am doing a residential garage with room below the garage. I am planning to use concrete slab on steel pan on top of a series of steel beams. Half of the walls below the garage is concrete basement wall, the other half will be 2x6 framed wall. I am just wondering what would be the best way to do detail the slab at the wood stud wall? Is it a bad idea to support it with wood framed walls? If it is ok, do you have to pour the slab first, then build stud 2x6 stud wall on top of it later? That may be sequence issue. I am not sure I have encountered this scenario before. Usually I have 3 sides of concrete basement wall, and 1 side with steel beam. Perhaps I should just put steel beams around the perimeter where there is no concrete wall?

I wouldn't support steel decking & a concrete slab on wood beams. I would put the perimeter steel beams in and just infill with studs below.
 
How would you support the perimeter steel beams? People support steel beams with stud pack a lot. Would you support it at corners with steel columns? Put steel beam on top of framed 2x6 wall? Use stud packs at corners?
 
I have never supported a steel beam with wood posts. I know a lot of architects and some engineers do that, but that's not something I ever specify. I'd just put in a couple of steel posts buried in the wall. You'd put one in each corner and then maybe a couple of others if you have space to split up the beam spans.
 
Thanks, yeah that is what I will do. Now I just need to figure out how to detail it so that they can build the wall at the garage level without needing to pour the slab first. Any idea?
 
Thx XR250. I need to keep the framing 2x6. You are right, that would make it easy for sure with the ledge. Maybe I'll do 2x10 and 2x6?
 
You're talking about the retaining walls? You can just design them as cantilevered since no slab will be up there yet.
 
If I have a perimeter steel, lets say it is W10X22. It is only 5.75" wide. On the top of it, 5.5" of it will be 2x6 framed wall. How will the pan be supported? I dont want to pour the slab first, then frame the wall above it.

Somehow I deleted my post. Yes, that should work. Maybe add an edge angle on the ledge or some extra longitudinal rebar to help distribute the wheel point loads to multiple studs. If we ignore the concentrated loads, the typical dist. load would be approx (60 psf dead + 50 psf live) x 4' trib x 1.33' O.c. = 600 lbs - which is nothing for a 2x10 stud.
 
I guess in that case you could make the beam wider or add a plate on the top flange to support the slab.
