We recently designed a piece of equipment using A572 Gr 50 steel. During fabrication this material was substituted with CORTEN A588. Is there any downfalls to using this material over the A572?

Click on the link for Plate Steel Specification Guide. Download the document, and you can review general mechanical properties of the two steel plate specifications.

Off-hand, I see no real problem with using A-588 Corten plate. This is a weathering grade of steel, and it would appear to have similar mechanicals as the A-572 Grade 50. Both plate steels are high strength low alloy grades.
