Hi. I'm just looking for some ballpark figures for the relative cost of 304SS, 316SS, and Hastelloy for manufacturing chemical processing equipment and vessels etc. Just rough numbers...TIA!

Fran,

It's a little awkward to give the info you seek right now as it appears to be a seller's market coupled with the price of nickel doing silly things. I have just heard that supplier quotations are being given with only a 15 day validity so it looks a little volatile at the moment. Another result of oil at USD 50 per barrel?

Well, ok, Steve. I just mean, does Hastelloy generally cost twice as much as stainless, 10 times as much, 30 times as much....?

From costs obtained last week, the commonly used nickel base alloys range from about 2.5 to 4 times that of 304 SS.

Thanks Stan. I have to ask Fran, why the jump from 304/316 straight up to Hastelloy? That's two ends of the corrosion resistant alloy spectrum. Are they for the same environment?
