Does anyone know how to count the number of holes in a part that are formed by the extrude command? I would also like to be albe to do this based on hole diameter. Thanks in advance

I think that "Hole report" will help.

Where is hole report. I forgot to mention, my version is NX3

You just need to switch "On" Mold Wizard app. As far as I know, you don't need to install the additional moldbase library.
In the MoldWizard bar look for Assembly drawing button. Next to it there is a small arrow. Click on it and you'll find Hole Report button.

This is not wuite what i need. Thanks though. I was hoping that there was a way from modeling to select holes of a certain diameter and count them, then add that number to the expression list, or something of that nature.

Does anyone have a suggestion on how to do this?

This can be done in Manufacturing. Using the Drilling operation you can select all holes on a face and select by size. Otherwize you will need some api program to acomplish this task.

Not everyone has access to the manufacturing license. I guess maybe a GRIP is needed? Any suggestions on how I would write this? I am not very familiar with grip programs.

I don't think GRIP would be the answer. This programming language does not support features. I think it could find cylindrical faces though.

As far as writing GRIP - there is an extensive amound of data in the help docs.

I find it odd that a tool as powerful as UG/NX does not have the ability to count the number of holes, in a model or drafting view without going to the extent of writing my own script.

If you use simple hole features to make your holes or perhaps by renaming them at such then for a single model you can go into the part navigator and filter for a particular type of feature. Having done so if necessary you can export that to excel to help with the counting.

It is a work around solution at best, but it seems like we're struggling to find a better answer.

I think that might be our best solution for the short term. Does anyone know if there is a hole count feature in NX5?

No, there is NO 'hole count' feature in NX 5, nor NX 6. I doubt if we will ever add one as part of the official product as I've never heard of anyone asking for something like this before. BTW, is anyone aware of any OTHER CAD system that will count the number of 'holes' in a model? And I don't mean features that are labeled as holes since we can do that already, but rather concave, cylindrial voids normal to at least one face which may or may not pass completely through the model?

Now if it's that critical that one or two users have a need for something like this, then perhaps someone could write a program using NX Open to perform such as task (there are many out there who do this for a living by the way). After all, that's why we took the effort of providing what many consdier to be the most OPEN product on the market with some of the most powerful customization tools available just for such situations as meeting the obscure and/or proprietary needs of our customers.
