I have a customer requesting the use of "counterforts" in addition to (2) saddles for extra support as the plant location is in a high seismic area. Can someone steer me in the right direction? Never seen/heard of such a thing before used in this manner.

Thanks.

Most companies do not permit the use of third saddle. However, there is no restriction to provide one. The wrapper plate of third saddle support shall not be welded to the vessel shell.

Forgive me, but I don't understand the relevance of your reply. The vessel is adequately supported by (2) saddles...my question is about counterforts and exactly what they are, not multiple saddles. I've found "counterforts walls" but they don't look like anything more than a gussetted wall. How would counterforts work w/ a saddle? Are they gussetted saddles? An additional support w/ gussetts attached to the vessel?
