Why do two-phase polymers have a higher resistance to crack propagation than single-phase polymers?

The interface between the two phases deflects the crack and also energy is needed to debond the interface thus helping to stop propagation. You can probably find a really nice description of this is you search the web. The same is true for composites in many cases, adding filler can improve the impact resistance as you are adding a decond phase.
 
I don't think that's the reason that blends can help impact resistance because I have seen in help in amorphous polymers that can't form crystals.
