Dear Members,

I am designing a crane beam steel type "open web type " due to heavy crane loads and large spans. Crane capacities are two nos. of 50t and crane beam span is 24m. Crane beam has to design with top chord and bottom chord with web members. This crane girder will be supported by column in each end at both chord member points. To define the support points for these chord members , how define the type of supports for this crane beam?
Generally we define one end with Pin and other end with roller supports for a simply supported beam . Due to four types of support points , pl. suggest me the type of support which gives the best optimized design.

Thanking you.

I don't follow the question.

You have described only two support types: a pin and a roller and I would design both the same. Is the crane beam mobile? or are there more than one?

I take it that at each end you have two supports, one at top chord and another at the bottom chord. If this is the case, the distribution of load share between these two supports is unknown as well as a variable of temperature!

At best you can take all supports as pinned or fixed. But thereafter you will have to ensure that fabrication details are actuaaly meeting these requirements of fixity. My answer is very general and should be interpreted in that way as I do not have a fair understanding of the structure that you have described.

Perhaps a plate girder type of beam will better suit your case. We have used plate girders for the spans and loads like your case on occassions.

Dear Mr. Flame,

Thank you for your response. In my case as span is large and loads are heavy , I have opt for Open web type. For other spans ranges from 15m to 18m , I will go for Plate Girder type.

Dear Mr. DJK,

I am sorry for for not putting the question in a right way. Pl. read out the following few lines

There are 9 Crane beams and their spans are ranging from 9m to 24m. Two cranes in same aisle are running on these crane beams and each crane capacity is 50t. For spans between 9m and 18m , I have designed them as Plate Girder type with simply support conditions. For larger spans, I am going for Open web type with top & Bottom Chords. My question is how to define the support conditions for these chord members at column locations. Separate columns are provided to support the crane beams.

Thank you in advance.

KVRam.
