we've been asked if walking a 640k crane over a tilt panel is acceptable due to site constraints. i have no intention of answering this question in the affirmative as its means and methods but i wondered if anyone has come across this before. i understand the mechanics of the situation but it seems pretty unreasonable to me.

Seems unreasonable to me, too. Not to say it couldn't be done...
A scenario I foresee coming up is somebody coming in the next day saying "It cracked it, but it's just a wee little crack so we need you to certify that it's okay..."

Seem like a lot could go wrong here. What engineer wants $2.5MM worth of liability for the profit on a $2500 fee?

The entity who has the most to gain should take most of the risk and make the assessment.

Sure, not so very different from questions I handle.

There's no way I'd let it walk up onto a panel and across. But if the crane was brought up to the top of panel elevation separately, the panel was laid on a uniform prepared surface, and the calcs checked out... sure. I'll take that job.

I don't suppose the crane can pick the tilt panel, walk with the load for a little bit, then swing and put the panel back down?

Lots of questions.
1. Style of Crane? Wheel or crawler?
2. What do you know about the ground and casting slab beneath?
3. Would they be prepared to build a pad over the area of the panel for the crane to pass over?
4. Geotech info?

Far crazier stuff is done in the industrial world.

1. tracked crane
2. casting slab is 6 inch unreinforced over 4 inch compacted agg base, k=100pci (although this wont apply to a 620k crane!)
3. not sure
4. 2000 psf allowable bearing

we've recommended they omit a bay of slab on grade parallel to the back wall to walk the crane inside the building

I have seen it done before with a bed of sand put down to protect the panel.

If the subgrade and slab are prepared correctly, then they are just transferring the load.

Pick the panels from the outside of the building at the back wall. Use a hydraulic crane (with moves) to pick the panels at the back wall.
