It doesn't matter what I do, but NX (version in topic) consistently crashes.

Today, 2 times. Both while in the sketch function. Sometimes it can be while closing down a part, switching between drafting and modeling modes. Anything, nothing makes any sense.

It's a Ultra 60, about 400mhz, not quite 2 gigs of ram (ancient technology, I know). SunOS 5.8 generic_108528-09 sun4u spac SUNW,Ultra-60 (uname -a response).

Where I work they would rather the managers get new laptops each year then spend a few thousand on the designers to get new machines.

As for upgrading, the boss doesn't want to upgrade because we wouldn't be compliant with General Motors version.

Any suggestions or ideas?

Did this just start happening out of the blue, or did you recetnly install any kind of update from UGS, SUN or anybody? If not, are you working with some new NX files (native, IGES, STEP, whatever) that you just received from someone?

We started having problems in December when we went to NX 3.0.

A few of the errors would be bus errors, modeler errors, Bad size for allocation request in storage manager, memory access violations. Then it has progressed to just out right crashing. I see the usually pop ups, but they don't stick around long enough for me to read them. The crash resembles kill -9. You hear a beep, then the next second it's gone.

As far as anything being installed or upgraded, nope. Same since December. The OS hasn't been updated either.

We pretty much work on our own files. We get a few customer files but those are more for reference. All existing and brand new files.

Here is a syslog file

Have you called in the problem to GTAC?

switch to another MP the GM MP5A doesn't work on windows, too.
we are working for GM witk MP10 on this NX3.02.3 realease

No, I haven't called into Gtac. I have been debating, but figure I would track down the problem myself.

I will see about upgrading to MP10.

We (here at GM) have been told by UGS that this "crashing" is caused by a bug in Parasolid modeling kernel that is exacerbated by working in shaded mode. The UGS suggestion is to not work in shaded mode. This is supposed to be fixed in 3.0.4, I believe. we see the same issues here on both Unix and Windows platforms, especially when switching between work and displayed part in shaded mode. Hope this helps.

That is good to know.

But I hardly work in shaded mode. It crashes in the middle of sketch, no model there at all.

I know if I select a component off in the assembly tree while in sketch, it will crash. But not kill the session, it just gives me an error and backs up on the undo tree. Now if I just blank the component with ctrl-b, no problems.

Anyways, I will definitely not work in shaded mode to avoid that. Thank you.

Well we had MP10 installed and now we have bigger problems.

Everytime you try to do an extrusion or even revolved section, the instant you click on a line, NX crashes. Doesn't even report anything in the syslog file in /var/tmp.

Strange, very strange. Now to get this all rolled back to Mp5 will be fun, or possibly call GTAC not sure which way it'll go.

Jackley,

I don't know if this is the solution to your problem or not. We had simular problems and the fix was a new driver for the spaceball. Evedently, the space ball has been creating a number of problems lately.

Just a thought,

TCT
