I am trying to mimic the production methods from the shop to create a cone in SolidWorks 2007 SP4.0. I copied the flat pattern and would like to roll it into a cone. I was looking at the "flex" feature, but I would need to create a sort of tapered bend that I don't think it can do.

I would also accept a method involving creating a cone with the revolve feature, and get a flat pattern from that. I tried following the help's intstructions on using sheet metal with cones, but I get an error when I try to flatten the part. Does anyone know where I can download a sample?

You can unroll a cone in SW sheetmetal part model. I don't think you can roll one from a flat.

The way I create sheet-metal cones is to use the: Insert - Sheet Metal - Lofted Bends

1) Create a circular sketch of the bottom of the cone (note: you need to leave a gap in the sketch (open profile) where the metal will wrap together)

2) Offset the plane by the height of the cone

3) Create a Sketch of the top of the cone (again you need to leave a gap in the sketch (open profile))

4) Insert -> Sheet Metal -> Lofted Bends

By creating it as a sheet metal feature, I have never had a problem flattening it. Sometimes creating it as a revolve or standard loft gives geometry that SW can't flatten.

Hope this helps,
Lou

Thanks GLED that works perfectly!!!

Thanks to you to, TEngle, those sample drawings are just what I was looking for.
