We have number of Nx4 users at work connected by a network,
These users may use any one of a number of machines,
How do I setup NX4 so that all the roles are stored on the network and displayed on any work staion for the user to select.

Thanks in advance for any help.

To start with I don't think that it matters where the role file is saved as long as the user can see them whenever they need to recall their icons. It seems that from one session to the next the system still stores the files in .....

C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application Data\Unigraphics Solutions\NX5\user.mtx

... because I can delete the role file without losing my icons.

Now as a suggestion what we usually do is set up user profiles separately from use directories because having a specific working directory in a known location is usually easy for the users and straightforward for backups. So we give them ownership of that directory as a network and have each user map it as a drive on their machine either by convention or using a login batch file. Knowing that each user's working directory is z: is convenient for setting up many things for a range of programs not least of which is NX itself. It also makes a smart place to have them stash their saved roles and load_options.def files etc....

redirekt it into an networkshare with the following VAR:
UGII_USER_PROFILE_DIR=

I believe that :-

UGII_USER_PROFILE_DIR=

Is the answer to my question,
But where do I alter this line ?

Cheers
Alan

<install path>\UGII\ugii_env.dat or in a startup batch file.

No still not got it.

I've found the file 'ugii_env.dat'

But the line 'UGII_USER_PROFILE_DIR=' is not in the file

any ideas ?

... it is an extra var, try this:
centralize , mtx history, mru, dialogmemory files
UGII_USER_PROFILE_DIR= \\servername\%username%\

So far, So good.

I've got that working.

Next question.

How do I get the active role to save it's current icon locations on close down,

Thanks

Alan,

The short answer is that it just does. If it doesn't what makes you think not?

Somebody may answer in more detail so I'd encourage you to let us know your server and workstation type and operating systems in case we're able to add something further. It really isn't an NX question so much as a networking issue.

Without any sophisticated system in place and assuming that you're using windows with logins under an NTFS installation for each user of each machine the default behaviour is to create a local profile. Under the user's profile NX will seek the directory using the path which I posted above to the file "user.mtx". In that case when moving between machine users just need to load their saved roles.

Other ways might include the use of roaming profiles kind of obviates the need for some of these, but depending on your system the best I'm likely to offer is to google some useful links for you. Really to get NX working properly you're good to go without.
