Creating Multiple Lines Rapidly

Let me give some background before I put up my question.

Typically fasteners are represented using 1D elements in FEM and our practices are no different. We got a new functionality in our FE pre-processing tool, where automatic fastener elements can be created for hundreds of them at a time and one of the inputs required is via pair of nodes (for ends of fasteners) or lines. We have found lines to be a more convenient option.

Lines can be created using the pre-processing tool but it has to be done manually for each pair and worse, one cannot reverse the orientation of line once its created. Of course one can be careful during creating lines to make sure line orientation vector is same but as of now this is a very time consuming process (especially if our panels contain hundreds of fasteners). Also, in some of the panels that we receive, the fasteners are placed in a staggered pattern which makes it difficult to use transformation tools like rectangular or circular array.

Exploring options if we can generate lines in Catia itself. Problem is that, AFAIK, I have to create a point manually for each hole before connecting them with a line. Tedious work.

Is there an easy & rapid way to do the above in Catia V5? I have not explored Structural Meshing workbench in Catia V5 & perhaps there is a way there but in other commonly used workbenches like Part & GSD, can the above be accomplished?

Thanks...

Hi.
A simple macro can easily generate any number of lines inside a part assuming you provide it a set of point coordinates as an input (an Excel-like file will do).

Is that what you want?

Hi,
Mainly I am hoping for a command where I can select multiple hole edges at the same time and Catia would create a center point automatically. Next, I am hoping for a command where I select all the points I want the lines to be connected and Catia would generate lines in one go. For the latter, I would specify the max distance range the points lie within and Catia would evaluate and create appropriate lines. Of course, there could be some erroneous lines which could be corrected or deleted manually.

I don't think both of the above options are currently available in Catia.

Further, the input for a macro like your suggestions still would need me to extract the center point coordinates for possibly several hundred fastener holes.

Many a times, the CAD files I receive will have the actual fasteners as well. Perhaps, I can look in to if I can create lines along the axis of a cylindrical body. Still that will require individual selection of each fastener or bulk selection is possible?

bulk selection, for ALL holes CREATE axis, points whatever...

Hi LWolf,
GUI for point & 3D line creation does not support bulk selection.

what I meant, was to continue on Little Cthulhu response, i.e writing the script will enable any selection to take place, statring with the holes...
sorry if I was unclear

LWolf
