Creating rib inside a shelled cover

Hi all,
Had problems creating rib sections within the shelled cover (similar to battery cover). I defined a sketch plane, & drew all my ribbed sections on it, selected "extrude to next surface", but with no luck.

I then simplified the sketch pattern, & used only one line (one end touching the curved surface end, other end is open end)+ selected thicken option, it worked! It just didn't want to work with all the sections on!!!

Can anyone give some ideas why, & how to solve it?

engmechs,
The way that you have described using the rib feature, it is as if you are looking at the rib from the end?? In Pro/E ribs are sketched and extruded from the side. Perhaps I misunderstood your description...
In any case, I have successfully added ribs within shells.
It didn't always work the first time. You have to be carefull when picking your references.

Hi JW,
I actually used the protrusion command (not a rib command, even though they performed a very similar functionality in this case), & I did get the protrusion working when only one section was made (but not 1+ section). What I did was: pick the cover top edge plane as sketch plane & start sketch my "rib section" + protrusion towards to the inner surface!

This really get me going. If I set my reference wrong, the one section shouldn't work out, is that right?

Please advise.

engmechs,
I would really have to see the model.
I am afraid that I might just confuse matters by trying to guess what your geometry looks like.
As far as references go, I was speaking specifically about the "rib" creation feature in Pro/E.

engmechs,

Your original post mentioned you used the extrude an thicken commands, suggesting that your original sketch was just a line.

If you try to extrude multiple open lines, you will get an error because there are multiple open loops in the section. It thinks it is creating one surface by extruding but it gets input for several surfaces, which violates Pro/E's rules. Closed loops in the sketch are another matter.

If I were you I would use the rib tool because it automatically heals the geometry at the ends of the rib. For example, an extruded rib off of a convex curved surface would result in gaps (since the section is only tangent at one point, whereas the rib tool will fill these gaps in.

good luck

Hi justkeepgiviner & JW,
I tried the rib command, & it kind of work alright now. Although I still puzzled why the standard protrusion didn't work (it worked for one section only but that is it), but well, this is not my problem now. At least, I can get around it. Thanks guys!
