What is the correct way to design a crippled stair stringer? Is it correct to use the "plan" dimension or should I use the actual channel length as the beam length? Any thoughts on stair design are greatly appreciated.

PBW - The bending moment in an inclined member is found by using the loading on plan and the horizontal distance between supports.

deebee is right. You can prove it to yourself by resolving the loads perpendicular and parallel to the stringer. You will of course also get some axial load in the stringer as well as bending. Carl Bauer
