CROSS THREADING FORMULA

I WAS WONDERING IF ANYONE KNOWS IF THERE IS A FORMULA TO FIGURE OUT THE MAXIMUM OR MINIMUM ANGLE AT WHICH A BOLT WILL CROSS THREAD INTO A NUT?

That's a damn fine question, but you'd be better off asking the mechanical engineers. If I see an assembly geek today I'll ask him. Cheers

The question is, though, why would anyone want to cross thread a bolt??

DFulmer---It's not a matter of "wanting" to cross thread a bolt, but rather at what point WILL it crossthread. I installed an automated assembly machine at U.S. Borax a number of years ago and I used a formula for missalignment tollerance. I remember that the threaded portion was 3/8 BSPP by 19 tpi and the angle was 0.25 degrees plus or minus, but I haven't a clue how I arrived at that number!

I suppose that makes sense, but as an auto repair tech, I never had to consider that part of it. Start it by hand, and you usually end up okay..
