crossflow fans, how do they work?

I've pondered crossflow fans and think I understand how they work, but I'd like to hear it from another person.

Can anyone explain how a crossflow fan is different from a squirrel cage, or centrifugal fan?

what exactly does a crossflow fan do, and how does it do it?
