Any tips on 98% Sulfuric Acid 1" CS piping/fitting welding in order to minimize corrosion and acid spills? Site climate is dry with ambient temperature + 40 C.

I would use the GTAW process for the root and fill for the piping and fittings, and make sure the sulfuric acid remains concentrated - no moisture, and is under low flow conditions for service. Do not use carbon steel if injecting the sulfuric acid in a flow stream.

Two fundamental rules of 98% sulfuric acid piping:

- Use 304/316 stainless if you can...if not, go for heavy wall carbon steel...Schedule 80 or better.

- Keep the piping big and the velocity low....say 2-3 feet per minute.

Oh..... and don't expect the system to last forrever. If you get five years, you have gotten your monies worth

Carbon steel derives its resistance from the formation of a protective ferrous sulphate layer. Hence, the importance of controlling the velocity. Keep it low as mentioned
