Any protection that has to work when the CT saturates (i.e. when there is a fault).

The most common problem is with current differential protection. In this case, a small mismatch in the saturation characteristics of the CT's can cause nuisance tripping.

See faq238-1287, under Power System Protection

This GE/Multilin white paper discusses CT saturation for certain applications.

If you check the SEL website ( you will find some additional tech papers on CT performance.

If you're REALLY interested, check J.L. Blackburn's Protective Relaying book for a good discussion of CTs and relays.

If you're REALLY, REALLY interested, Stan Zocholl of SEL has published a book on Current Transformers.
