We have a Cummings marine diesel engine. This engine was manufactured by Kirloskar Cummings Ltd, January 1993 in Pure India. Model # VTA-28-M2. The original serial number was engraved in the engine block and was also stamped on an aluminum ID plate which was attached to the engine block. We purchased the new engine in 1995 and installed it in a 75 ft boat. Sometime between the date of manufacture and the time we purchased this engine the letter 'R' was added to both the ID plate serial number and the engine block serial number. The 'R' appears to have been punched using a hand held punch and hammer. My question is,does anybody have any ideas as to why this letter would have been added to the serial number? If anybody could help shed some light on this mystery it would be much appreciated.
