I have a part that has 1/8 BSP threads and I need to thread it with NPT threads. What's the proper tap to use, a taper or bottoming tap?

All NPT taps are tapered. You will only need a bottoming tap if you cannot drill the tap hole deep enough. Typicaly, for large pipe sizes you drill the tap drill and then ream the hole with a tapered ream. For small pipe sizes (<3/4") you can get away without the reaming operation.
