Hello all
New subscriber here, I have 4" main Supply/return legs on a CHW system I want to apply clamp on mechanical Tee's to extend to a secondary area (capacity is not a problem) I can turn off the chiller short time but can not drain down, in order to drill the hole for fitting (really quickly) --- I am concerned that whilst drilling through the pipe wall, maybe swarf (metal shavings) and possibly the plug piece itself may fall inside the pipe contaminating the water. Maybe this is crazy but has anyone heard of a "magnetized" diamond hole cutter bit that would prevent this happening (Hole would be 1-1/2") or another option?? appreciate your help.

While not claiming to be an expert in such processes, and you haven't mentioned your piping material that could be a factor safety or otherwise, I believe some hole cutters are equipped with pilot drills and/or fancier gizmos to retain coupons and keep them from falling inside pipe. Also, if you e.g. choose to do a "hot tap" under pressure as opposed to shutting your line down, I would think the likelihood of shavings/chips etc falling might conceivably even be minimized with some outward pressure and the use of a debris flusher etc. (e.g.

assuming this is steelpipe, I'd be concerned with clamp-on Tees on the long run. Welding is the best option. Obviously this advice doesn't help with your question... but research what rconner said. You probably still want to flush and i hope all equipment has strainers.

count on some dirt staying in the pipe and look where it would end up.

I've seen mechanical contractors freeze lines that size. That would allow you to open up the line to insert a tee. Look for "line freezing services"
