Dear all, I need to know the necessity of providing the cyclone filter along with filtration unit with cartridges in a filtration skid for sales gas metering in pipeline projects. The flow rate is 152 MMSCFD & Flow velocity is 18.3 m/s. whether we have o use cyclone or not.

I'm assuming you actually mean a gas scrubber like this
How are we supposed to know from the minimal (non existent) information you have provided?? Flow rate and velocity in your pipe is irrelevant (though velocity in your pipe looks a bit high). This is about gas quality and liquid free status and reliability, nothing else.

If you any chance whatsoever, of having liquid or even mist in your gas then a scrubber is a good idea as the cost of it compared to the cost of damage to any downstream equipment (especially compressors or third party equipment) is small

Thanks you sir but the Cyclone filter is being used to remove the solid loading in the gas whose size is in some microns. So I want to know that in a 16 inch pipeline having Hydrocarbon gas flow rate of 152 MMSCFD & flow velocity of 18.3 m/s, do we need the cyclone filter or a simple filter with cartridge is enough.( to check cost effectiveness)

Maybe you are talking about something like this:

In general its very difficult in this forum to discuss these specifics. We cant tell if you need something or not - many factors may influence this. But someone might be able to tell what standards to use and what vendors that will deliver.

Best regards, Morten

The cyclones work out much cheaper in the long run if your total solid loading is significant as they don't need new filter pads, just a clean out every now and then. If it isn't and you only need to change the filters every 3 - 6 months, then a filter set-up with ability to swap filters should be OK.

Flow rate and velocity are not really relevant here, it's all about how dirty is your gas?

When deploying anything that relies on centripital acceleration, I always try to get the applicable Weber Number range of the device and see if my nominal flow is in that range. It is amazing how narrow the Weber Number sweet spot is in gas applications. So a better question (in my mind) will the cyclone separator actually do anything if installed?
