DC Brush Motor Commutation Count

Has anyone ever heard of a control scheme that counts the commutations on a DC brush motor? I assume that there is some circuit that counts spikes on the current. This count could then be used in place of an encoder.

Suggestion: Sometimes, commutations are counted for error-corrections. Compare the principle with the paper that also includes commutation count for the error corrections, i.e.
