DC drive - field motor protection test 1

We have critical loads driven by DC motors. Almost all are fed through the DCS600 ABB drive type.
Question: is it usual to run field protection testing of the motor? I mean, primary current injection to test OC and OL response of the drive embedded protection system.

No, not usual at all. I have never done that. And I have worked with drives more years than you want to know.

I cant't even imagine how you could inject a primary current sucessfully.

If the drives are so critical and you do not trust the built-in protection, it may be a good idea to have external protection. That can, of course, be tested with primary current injection, if you think that it is necessary.

OTOH, it is very unlikely that two separate protection systems fail simultaneously. So I think that there is no need for testing, once it has been installed and tested.
